Functional Radiosurgery

Dr. G. Lütjens took part in the special radiosurgery course “Functional Radiosurgery” in Marseille from September 16th-19th 2024, which was led by the internationally renowned Prof. J. Régis (Marseille) and Prof. R. Martinez (Madrid). This course focused on high-precision neuromodulation using radiosurgical gamma-knife radiation. This can be used, for example, to treat tremor (trembling of the hands), psychiatric disorders such as drug-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder or depression, certain pain disorders and forms of epilepsy. With his previous neurosurgical focus on neuromodulation using stereotactically implanted electrodes (deep brain stimulation) as a background, Dr. Lütjens would like to apply functional Gamma Knife irradiation beyond the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia in the future.
